83 the film based on the cricket would cup in the year 1983 has taken good start in the metros of 40-45% and this is more or less all the five big centres with huge presence of premium multiplexes be it Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore. The opening outside this is much lower in the range of 10-30% and the smaller centre the lower the opening gets.

The overall opening is around 25-30% which in general terms is fair but low for a film of this magnitude. The smaller centres dont really matter much for the film but its the slow opening in the likes of Surat, Lucknow and Jaipur which is an issue as these are big A centres and pretty much representive of that all India audience and it has to show a turnaround in these places. 83 is an important film for the Hindi film industry as though Spiderman - No Way Home and Pushpa (Hindi) have done well they were Hollywood and South films respectively.

The film has released on around 3300 plus screens in its Hindi version but the cinema count seems pretty low at around 1800 which means its a top heavy multiplex release.  Last week Pushpa (Hindi) had opened opened on 1450 cinemas but there the screen count was also similar as it was playing on just one screen in practically all its theatres.

Normally with a film with this sort of budget and then this sort of opening it would be tough to recover but it is the Xmas period going forward and collections can start to move faster from this evening as its a big national holiday tomorrow and then its going to be that holiday period from Monday when offices remain shut so the film can take advantage of that.

But all this depends on the content as holidays dont mean much if the film is not actually good, also right now there is a choice for the audience and if 83 is not that good then that will push this multiplex audience to Spiderman - No Way Home which the audience has already liked and accepted and that film will take benefit of the Xmas / New Year period.

The film has also been released in South in many languages which is probably an attempt to be a so called pan India film from the Hindi film industry but as seen last week with Pushpa and Spiderman - No Way Home it is only the big Hollywood action films which can work across the board on a regular basis while the South or Hindi content will mostly get stuck on one side. If Hindi works then South will not and if South works Hindi will not with Bahubali being the exception here so far. Its probably a 300-400 cinema release down South for 83.
