Cirkus has taken a dull opening at the box office around 10-15% as the biggest box office shock comes with the last major release of 2022. The trailer was not funny as it could have been and the music was very average but the film had appeal for a wider section of the audience rather than the many limited appeal films that have released this year but still the audience has not turned up anywhere.
Rohit Shetty films have a huge following in Maharashtra and Gujarat also but that has also not worked in favour of the film as these places are also dull. They maybe better than other parts but still are recording poor collection and very low occupancy.
The film was always unlikely to be huge as the trailer and music did not work well and also the green screen look of the film gave it a weird feel but to open to these low numbers will send shockwaves around the industry mainly because its an established HIT film director which was not the case with many of the other dud openers over the last year or so.
The holiday periods have been a killer post the pandemic apart from Sooryavanshi and unless something spectacular happens on Sunday it will be another huge holiday period going down the drain. Christmas 21, Eid 22, Raksha Bandhan / Independence Day 22, Gandhi Jayanti 22 and Diwali 22 have already seen disaster results.
Cirkus has the holiday period but where do you go from an opening like this as the genre has limitations as to how much it can grow and it needs to get some sort of number up on the first day. Here the morning numbers are very similar to Raksha Bandhan and it was a holiday that gave that film a push post afternoon and here we are also going to a holiday weekend which should help in the evenings.
