Laal Singh Chaddha had a low first day in the 10-11 crore nett though with a pick up post the afternoon it managed to get in double digits but it will just about. No doubt the number is low as its come on a holiday as well though its not a huge holiday but when a film does not cater to the youth or mass then you cant really expect big opening numbers in todays scenario.
The industry will see the numbers as shocking but there maybe still more shocks ahead until films get targeted at the audience which is coming to the cinemas. The film is in the same zone as the Christmas release 83 and the disappointment is that it did not go above that film on day one with a better cast and more holiday support than 83 which was a Christmas Eve release and that is not as good for box office collections as Raksha Bandhan.
The film is doing better in pretty much the same areas as 83 with Delhi NCR and South leading, The cities of Punjab picked up well for the film but the circuit of East Punjab as a whole should have done better.
The Hindi circuits have not performed at all and really need a miraculous turnaround but the film can do reasonable business in the metros over the extended five day weekend. The issue is the huge expectations as its an event film coming in a strong period but with this sort of start those industry expectations have little or no chance to met.
