The last few weeks have been long as the industry waited for the the standard operating procedures and guidelines for cinemas to open in Maharashtra and they finally came in on Monday and were pretty much as expected. There is a 50% capacity rule and vaccination is not mandatory, there are night restrictions in the state which will mean late shows will be affected.
The industry pretty much knew that and was waiting for the state to make it official and it has happened now and we can have lift off on Diwali. It has been generally dissappointing whatever has hit theatres in all circuits but that can change now as countries that are ahead of India in the covid19 cycle are doing well and should be same in India in time.
There will be a slower pace in some areas as things start but then there will others that do very well and maybe even close to pre covid levels. The 50% cap rule will prove a hurdle but when this goes then the overall business will not be far off levels pre pandemic levels. One thing the industry should not expect is individual films doing huge numbers as the films dont have breathing space due to the back log but the overall cumulative numbers of all films should be encouraging. Also unlike Bell Bottom expectations for individual films should be realistic like what Hollywood does because if not then everything will disappoint.
