Godzilla v Kong has recorded very good collections on day one but the figures spell bad news for the Hindi film industry and shows how badly the main markets for Hindi films have been hit by the pandemic. The collections of this film pretty much clear the picture and although there are no announcements of the big Hindi films being moved ahead they are bound to come.

The only hope can be is that the scenario changes in the next four weeks or so and the trajectory of the pandemic goes the other way but that is a guessing game. Sooryavanshi and the Eid releases will have to move forward because if the conditions in the market are like they are today then these films will not be able to collect if they stick to their release dates.

Godzilla v Kong has collected 3.40 crore nett in Tamil Nadu and Nizam / Andhra combined and for this type of film the Mumbai circuit collections in normal times would be Tamil Nadu plus Nizam / Andhra at a minimum which is 3.40 crore nett but Mumbai circuit is just 75 lakhs nett.

A film like Sooryavanshi would be expected to do business in the 8-10 crore nett range on day one in Mumbai circuit but going by Godzilla v Kong the film is likely to do 2.50-3 crore nett if lets say for example it releases this Friday. This means on a best case scenario it might just about hit 9-10 crore nett opening day across India. This also puts the collections of Roohi and Mumbai Saga into perspective.

Nobody knows what the scenario will be at the end of April or in May but if its similar to what it is today then releasing a film is just a token gesture and you cant expect collections. The problem is just not for Hindi markets and even in South a good performer for Hollywood like Bangalore has done half the collections of what it would do normally. This is not as badly hit as Maharashtra, Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh but the collections tell the pandemic is an issue in Bangalore also.

Godzilla v Kong would have seen a fair value number of around 11 crore nett in normal times so the film has been hit 40-45% but thats a result for Godzilla v Kong as Hindi films are hit much more due to the demographics of the collections.
