Q. It is always said on the website that the Salman Khan stardom started with Dabangg in 2010 but he had Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994 and there were many other hits at that time also so the stardom did not really start with Dabangg.

Mohan Yadav

A. There are many stars in the industry but it does not mean box office super stardom as this happens to very few. Its not only just box office numbers because as you pointed there was Hum Aapke Hain Koun which is far bigger HIT than Dabangg and the biggest HIT in a generation. A male star has to do something in a film where the audience takes to him in the big way and for Salman Khan it happened with Dabangg and not Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. It was not only Dabangg as one film cant lead to such super stardom but others like Bodyguard and Ek Tha Tiger which helped cement the audience from where there was no looking back. A similar scenario took place with Shahrukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Sunny Deol in Ghayal and again these films started the craze but it was the films after which cemented the super stardom. You can have the biggest HITS but what you do in the film has to be a craze and that makes the big difference as many actors have give huge hits over the last 100 years but only 7 or 8 really big box office stars.

Q. There is always quotes on padding when it comes to stardom and it i said Akshay Kumar films dont have much padding but what is this padding?

J. Barsar

A. The biggest padding is budget and we dont mean the budget of a film as a whole as sometimes this is very high due to cost of artists. It is the actual production cost that the audience can see with the scale. Coincidentally the next Akshay Kumar film Robot has this padding unlike the other films. Other padding is super hit music and if a super hit song is pictured on a grand scale then its a huge bonus. Then there are co stars who are popular with face value. All these things are padding and added to a big male star will ensure a grand opening day.

Q. What would you call a good grosser and i dont mean in terms of budget but generally that a good number people a film has reached?

K. Navle

A. See its impossible to really put a number on as it what is good today will not be good tomorrow. Our general outline is a film with 1 crore footfalls will be a good grosser be it in 1968 or 2018 or 2038. Now some films are bigger that they need to watched by more than 1 crore people but if we look at the bigger picture then 1 crore footfalls will mean that the film is among the bigger films at anytime and it has reached a pretty wide audience.
