Twenty eight years back in 1980 Karan Johar’s father had produced a film called Dostana. In that film two child hood friends end up falling in love with the same girl. Circa 2008 Karan Johar’s Dostana also have two guys falling in love with the same girl but that is where the similarity ends.
As a plot there is nothing new in the film. Two guys (Abhishek & John) want to rent up a place in Miami (is it really that tough to find accommodation in Miami?) They find an ideal place but the condition is that the place will be rented only to babies coz the house is owned by a hot Baby ( Priyanka). No baba’s allowed.
The guys end up pretending to be gay. Halfway through the film both the baba’s fall in love with the baby, Baby falls in love with her Boss ( Bobby Deol). How this quadrangle is resolved is what Dostana is all about.
The screenplay of this film has a one point agenda on mind and that is entertainment at any cost and it does live up to its agenda. What adds fun & spice to this entire enterprise is the gay angle. In terms of scenes there a couple of them which are really laugh out loud. Like the scene in which Abhishek narrates the story of how he & John met & fell in love. Or the scene in which Boman Irani comes to their house for dinner. The screenplay is filled with scenes which are at times funny and at times filled with sugar coated romance.
Tarun Manshukani approaches this film in a light & frothy manner without hurting gay sentiments even though he caricatures them. He pays tribute to his mentor Karan Johar at every place possible even going to the extent of making John & Priyanka act out a scene from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. With the able support of the producer, cinematographer (Ayananka Bose redeems herself after Tashan in which her work went un noticed because of the fate of the film) & the entire technical crew this film comes out looking like a polished product.
All said and done the real star of the film is the chemistry shared between Abhishek,John & Priyanka. Priyanka has never looked hotter than this. With this film she made me forget Fashion & Drona. John is back to his Jism days in terms of looks. The girls who love John will be salivating by the end of the film. Amongst the three Abhishek scores the most. He is a complete show stealer. Bobby Deol is okay in a special appearance but seemed out of place whenever the three musketeers took over a scene.
Final few words:
Dostana is fresh, frothy, naughty & a delightful romantic comedy. It’s an ideal date movie. Be prepared for gazing eyes if two guys decide to go watch this film. You might end up looking happily gay.
