When I was a kid I had seen this film called Hatimtai. At that time it was one of the best magical adventure films I had ever seen. After watching Drona I feel like watching Hatimtai again. I am sure I will enjoy it more than this film inspite of its tacky effects by today’s standards.Drona is Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings but without an iota of brilliance in it. Like Potter our Drona stays with his cruel Aunt. He is something that he is not aware of. Goldie Behl had embarked on a highly ambitious venture with this one. He bought in the best of talent for the vfx.
I wish he had hired a good writer to write this magical adventure and maybe this film would have had the potential to become a very good film. What the screenplay tries to do is cater to every viewer in this country. It brings in songs which were not needed in the first place. Especially that Naina song, it just goes on & on. It has a love story, a mother – son track which was so boring that I almost counted the number of people in the theatre. Jaya Bachchan looked like she has just walked out of the K3G set. She was a casting disaster. Abhishek Bachchan is perfectly miscast as Drona. He dosen’t have the attitude of a superhero nor the charisma. Priyanka Chopra tries hard to be this super strong bodyguard but doesn’t impress at all. The only person who seems to be enjoying his role & was a joy to watch was Kay Kay. Every time he was on screen the film was worth watching. To his credit Goldie Behl has visualized the film very well but that’s about it. The action sequences are good, visual effects are top class. The pace of the film is like a bad road with speed breakers. Like Love Story 2050 this one is also all body but no soul.
Final few words: The most ambitious disaster of this year. Goldie Behl needs to do some soul searching before he makes his next film and should definitely not cast his ‘best friend’ Abhishek in it.
